Description: " If we submit everything to reason our religion will be left with nothing mysterious or supernatural."
Blaise Pascal, the precociously brilliant contemporary of Descartes, was a gifted mathematician and physicist, but it is his unfinished
apologia for the Christian religion upon which his reputation now rests. The
Penseés is a collection of philosohical fragments, notes and essays in which Pascal explores the contradictions of human nature in pscyhological, social, metaphysical and—above all—theological terms. Mankind emerges from Pascal’s analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God’s grace. This masterly translation conveys Pascal’s disarmingly personal tone and captures all the fire and passion of the original. Also contained in this volume are a comparison between different editions, appendices and a bibliography.
Monergism Review:
Pascal was a titanic genius, a man with a superb intellect. Even today I would say that this book is unmatched. Since Pascal was so bright his writing is very easy to read. There is no need to complicate the expression of an idea. Pascal not only puts his great defense in understandable terms; he communicates with great artistic expression. Simply a delight to read. Buy this book and you will have to read it again and again, every time finding new insight, adding strength and depth to your faith. To date there is no other apologetical work like it. It is my second favorite book of all time and one of the few books you can read again and again. Recommended with my highest possible recommendation--the only book that comes before it is Augustine’s
Confessions .
