Description : Kuyper presents Calvinism as a life-system of comprehensive and far-reaching effect, discussing its relationship to religion, politics, science, and art, and inquiring into its prospects for the future. Though based on lectures delivered in 1898, Kuyper's book retains its relevance even today.
Monergism Review:
If you have not read Kuyper’s
Lectures on Calvinism then you are missing out on a whole dimension of theology. Kuyper was a powerful thinker and these lectures represent some of his best work. I am not inclined to agree with everything he says, but no one has ever examined Calvinism the way Kuyper has in these lectures. He deals with the entire cultural aspect of the theology. His conclusions are astounding and philosophically powerful. This is a classic work on Calvinist theology.
Most have heard Kuyper’s name but they have never read anything he produced. This is the best introduction to his theology. Every time I read it I am inspired by his conclusions--the way he makes Calvinism out to be the absolute doctrine essential to every area of life. For Kuyper, Calvinism is at the very center of life because it provides a more serious interpretation of life. I feel this book should be required reading for students, pastors and serious theological entrepreneurs. It articulates a very important and unique perspective on Calvinism--showing it to be more than just another religious doctrine.
