Description: This second edition of An Introduction to the Old Testament has been revised and updated to reflect recent advances in Old Testament scholarship. An upper-level introduction that includes callouts, charts, and graphs, it offers a solid understanding of three key issues: historical background, literary analysis, and theological message. This second edition of An Introduction to the Old Testament integrates and interacts with recent developments in Old Testament scholarship. Several distinctives set it apart from other introductions to the Old Testament:
• It is thoroughly evangelical in its perspective
• It emphasizes “special introduction”—the study of individual books
• It interacts in an irenic spirit with the historical-critical method
• It features points of research history and representative scholars rather than an exhaustive treatment of past scholarship
• It deals with the meaning of each book, not in isolation but in a canonical context
• It probes the meaning of each book in the setting of its culture

Monergism Review: Like the NT introduction by Carson and Moo, when you ask yourself the question, “What is the best introduction to the OT?” this book is the answer. Not only does it deal with the theological teaching of each book, but it also deals with the critical scholarship: place in the canon, authorship, date, sources, purpose and destination. This is a scholarly introduction to the OT made accessible to the layman. There is really nothing like this work on the market. Yes, there are other introductions but none of them are as accurate, exhaustive or authoritative. This is up-to-date scholarship at your fingertips. If you are really serious about understanding Scripture, then this work is a must. Highly recommended!

I was impressed with the Monergism review of this book and generally like its approach. However, I was a bit disappointed in its use of the TNIV as the main translation quoted throughout the book. Aren't there better translations to use?
