Description:
In this commentary, Peter T. O'Brien offers an exegetical, theological and analytical commentary based on the Greek text of Colossians and Philemon. Introductory essays provide background on Colossae, the threat to faith of the "Colossian heresy"; Paul's handling of the Colossian philosophy and themes such as "Christ the Lord in Creation and Redemption" or "Freedom from Legalism." In addressing Philemon, O'Brien examines the theological issues of slavery and personal reconciliation between believers and traces Paul's pastoral attention between Philemon and his escaped and newly converted slave.

"Several major commentaries on Colossians press for attention. Probably the best is still that of Peter T. O'brien. Based on an exact exegesis of the Greek text, it is nevertheless presented with sufficient clarity to satisfy most readers who do not know the language. It is a mine of useful bibliography and helpful interaction with secondary literature (up to its time of writing), and wends it way through voluminous material without losing its theological moorings."
--D. A. Carson (from New Testament Commentary Survey)

Monergism Review:
What can I tell you about the commentaries of Peter T. O’Brien? They are the best available! I will take O’Brien on Ephesians and Colossians over any other commentary on the market. That is not to say there is no profit in others, but if you can only have one this is the one to get. He deals with the exegesis of the text in a way that those who don’t even understand Greek can grasp. His commentaries put forth all the views on controversial passages and he is usually accurate in his interpretation. This work is scholarly and worthy of consultation. You can load up your library hoping to get the best from the most or you can buy O’Brien and get the best in one volume. Like I said, other commentaries have profit, but O’Brien is always my first choice.
