Description: When I used to read these words written by the apostle Paul, I assumed that they were describing the characteristics of pagan societies:
But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; avoid such
men as these. (2 Tim. 3:1–5)
But then I realized, as the verses surrounding this passage indicate, that Paul was warning Timothy about the characteristics of those who would be within the church in the last days. Think of it—these are the kinds of problem people who attend church with you on a regular basis. There is even a chance that this passage might, in one way or another, describe you. But that’s OK, because, in the pages that follow, you will learn how to deal with the one sin that spawns them all.
