Description: In this final volume of a four-volume series, Michael Horton explores the origin, mission, and destiny of the church through the lens of covenantal theology. Arguing that the history of Israel and the covenant of grace provide the proper context for New Testament ecclesiology, Horton then shows how the church is constituted through the ascension of Christ, the Pentecost, and the Parousia and continues to live by the Word and sacraments. Horton's goal is to demonstrate the potential of a covenantal model for integrating the themes of the church as people and as place, with an urgent concern for contemporary practice.

Winner of the 2009 Christianity Today Book Award for Theology/Ethics
"A first-rate work that engages recent world-class voices across the confessional spectrum. Horton offers acute interpretations of his dialogue partners and fashions his own well-argued theses into a constructive, orthodox, biblical, Reformed ecclesiology. This is the kind of scholarly quality that 'neo-evangelicals' were hoping for when Carl Henry and company articulated their vision."
--Christianity Today

"Michael Horton has provided yet another elegant and erudite volume in what promises to be a final installment in his programmatic rewriting of Reformed dogmatics. Its aim was no less ambitious than bolstering what has often been identified as the Achilles' heel of Protestant theology, namely, ecclesiology, and he has done so with careful and consistent attention to the idea of covenant of grace. The result is a tour de force of Protestant ressourcement theology, with sufficient ecumenical sensibilities, yet edgy enough to leave a definite mark of a theologian of the Reformed community."
--Paul C. H. Lim, Assistant Professor of the History of Christianity, the Divinity School, Vanderbilt University
