Description
: The ethical principles and practices outlined by the author of this volume constitute indispensable advice for Christian boys who desire to become godly men for the glory of God. Chapter titles include "Piety as the Spring of Action and Regulator of the Soul," "Treatment of Brothers and Sisters and Others in the Family," "Behavior at Table," "Choice of Society and Formation of Friendships," "Government of the Tongue," etc. This book should be in every home, and in the library of every young man.

Your character is constantly forming. It is your business to keep out of the way of bad influences, and submit yourself to the moulding of the good. Keep in mind the great truth that you are forming a character for eternity. Some years ago, there were found on the banks of the Mississippi River the tracks of a human being made in the soft clay, which in time became hardened, and formed into stone. Now, the impression is immovable. You now resemble this soft clay. Everything with which you come into contact makes an impression. But as you grow older your character acquires solidity, and is less and less affected by these influences, till at length it will be like the hard stone, and the impressions made upon you and this season will become confirmed habits.

Monergism Review:
How to Be a Man is undoubtedly the most impressive book I have ever seen on the topic of godly masculinity. When I review a book I ask myself whether or not those who might purchase the book based on my review wd. thank me for the recommendation. As far as devotional literature, for fathers to read with sons (or for each to read alone), there is no book I can think of which I wd. more highly recommend. This work is not strictly confined to young men, but is applicable to men of all ages. Buy it, read it, then tell me that the chapters on Piety , Habits , Useful Labor , Education of The Heart, Education of The Mind, Private Prayer, Keeping The Sabbath, On Finishing What is Begun, Reading, Writing and Being Contented are not applicable to you as a man. This is also one of the most well written books I have ever read. The style is clear, the prose fluent and tight; there is essentially no extra-added verbiage. Newcomb’s illustrations are practical and precise, guaranteed to stay with you for a lifetime. His theology is solid: teaching that ‘piety is the main-spring of action, and the regulator of the soul’ . How to Be a Man will win your heart; it has more substance and depth in one chapter than most books have in 300 pages. Every person I know that has purchased this book for his or her family agrees: there is nothing better. Unabashedly, a solid volume qualified to be labeled a masterpiece…

Here are are two quotes taken from the work:

“The next thing is, always to obey the voice of conscience. If you go contrary to it, and do what conscience tells you is wrong, or neglect what it urges upon you as duty, you weaken that faculty, and harden the heart. When you refuse to hearken to the voice of conscience, the next time it will not speak so loud; and every time this is repeated, the weaker it grows, till at length it is scarcely heard at all, and you may go on and sin almost without restrain.

“There are no good plants thriving in the prayerless soul; but weeds, and briars, and thorns, grow think and rank, occupying every vacant spot. The stone wall is broken down: there is no defense against the beasts of the field. Every vagrant thought, every vicious passion, find free admittance. The heart grows hard, and careless. Sin is not dreaded as it once was. The fear of God and the desire of his favor are gone. “God is not in all his thought.” That youth stands on the very edge of a frightful precipice.”
