Description: Paul teaches that "all Scripture is inspired by God" (2 Timothy 3:16). Evangelical and Reformed Christians accept this as a foundational element in our faith. But now the question arises: Exactly which books belong in Scripture?

The Westminster Confession of Faith of 1647 states: "The books commonly called Apocrypha, not being of divine inspiration, are no part of the canon of the Scripture, and therefore are of no authority in the Church of God, nor to be any otherwise approved, or made use of, than other human writings"(WCF 1:3).

The Westminster Divines were echoing the beliefs found in many other Reformed Confessions at the time. This included Martin Luther's conviction that the books contained in the Apocrypha were not inspired and authoritative and therefore did not belong in the canon of Scripture.

Needless to say, Roman Catholics disagree! The Apocrypha was formally canonized by the Roman Church on April 8, 1546 A.D. at the Council of Trent. The resolution of the Council was: "if anyone receives not as sacred and canonical the said books entire with all their parts, as they have been used to be read in the Catholic Church...let him be anathema (accursed!)."

In this two hour debate Reformed Baptist scholar Dr. James R. White and Roman Catholic apologist Gary Michuta, author of Why Catholic Bibles are Bigger, deal with fundamentally important questions, such as:

*        Did the Roman Church add books to the Bible?
*        Was the addition a reaction to Protestantism?
*        Did Protestants remove seven books from the Old Testament?
*        What is the true canon of Scripture?

Ultimately this debate revolves around an enormously important, foundational difference between Romanism and Protestantism: the question of authority. Protestants believe that not only does Rome put tradition on an equal footing with Scripture, but it also adds several non-inspired books to the Bible itself.
